Through referrals from Subea (Subdepartment of Animal Welfare), UFMS (Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul) has already performed two thousand surgical procedures on dogs and cats in Campo Grande. Since March, the city hall has maintained an agreement with the university for more complex care.

Since then, almost two thousand procedures have been performed. For the undersecretary, Ana Luiza Lourenço, this agreement brought a great advantage for tutors. “The agreement brings great savings to the guardians, since the animal undergoes surgical procedures completely free of charge”, she says.

Other services carried out through Subea are castration, which costs 600 a month, and microchipping of animals. According to Ana Luiza, neutering the animals is the undersecretary’s main goal. “Neutering is the best way to combat abandonment and mistreatment of animals. Today Campo Grande has 7,200 annual castrations just for our portfolio”.

About chipping, she comments that “we register the animal in the owner’s name and in case of escape or abandonment, we are able to identify the person responsible”. There are already 2,700 animals identified in the Capital.
