Today, the Orthodox Church honors the martyr Holy Sunday – Kyriakia. Her life was translated into Old Bulgarian by Patriarch Evtimii Turnovski in the 14th century.

The saint lived in the 3rd century in the Asian part of the Roman Empire. It was called Kyriakia, which in Greek means Sunday. Traditions say that she was an extremely beautiful girl who early accepted the faith for her own way. Many young men asked her for a wife, but she refused because her life was filled with prayers and holiness. One of the rejected men revealed to the Roman authorities that the virgin Cyriakia professed the then forbidden Christian faith.

So Nedelya was imprisoned and tortured, and finally sentenced to death by being cut with a sword. They allowed her to pray before her death. After the prayer, St. Nedelya breathed her last before they raised the sword.

Today the name day is celebrated by Nedelya, Nedelcho, Nedyalka, Nedyalko, Neda, Nedyo, Nedka, Nedko, Neli, Nelina, Nenka, Nenko, Nencho, Delyan, Delyo, Delcho.
