Candidate for his succession. In power for almost fourteen years, Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba announced on Sunday that he will be a presidential candidate on August 26, for a third term.

For the time being, he appears to be the big favorite in the ballot because the opposition is advancing in a very dispersed order. About twenty personalities have already announced their intention to present themselves.

Formality

Ali Bongo Ondimba, 64, was first elected in 2009 on the death of his father Omar Bongo Ondimba, who had ruled the country for over forty-one years. He was then narrowly re-elected in 2016.

His candidacy will have to be endorsed by an investiture Congress scheduled for Monday of his all-powerful Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG), which largely dominates Parliament and is a big favorite in the legislative and municipal elections which will take place the same day as the presidential.

His inauguration by the CEO on Monday will be a formality, as the party has been begging him for more than a year to run for a third term. The closing date for official nominations is Tuesday.
