Question the protective status of the wolf

In his position of July 8, Thomas Hödlmoser takes on the role of the wolf advocate with his criticism of the state government, but without questioning any argument.

So here are a few facts:

1. In the Austrian commercial forest managed by hunting, there is no need for the wolf to limit the game population. The wolf does not only do nothing for the good ecological condition of forests and alpine pastures, but it actually endangers it because hunting and alpine pastures are given up because of the wolf.

2. Furthermore, there is no reason for the “Flora-Fauna-Habitat-Guideline” protection status of the wolf because of the high population.

3. Herd protection only works where the wolf is not. Wherever he is, the wolf overcomes every obstacle.

4. It is absolutely inadmissible to equate wolf tears with the slaughter of livestock. Wolves kill in the cruellest way by eating their prey. Animals attacked by wolves often die days later.

5. The calves from Salzburg in Spain are fattened there on straw in accordance with the highest animal welfare standards. If animals were to be slaughtered, it would be a scandal. But what does all this have to do with the wolf?

6. If wolves are left unrestrained, it’s only a matter of time before they attack humans. Just like individual dogs do.

7. The financial expenditure for wolf management is politically absolutely irresponsible and the topic takes up a disproportionate amount of space.

In summary, I can only recommend that the new state government continue to act decisively against the FFH status of the wolf.
