Authorities sign a collaboration agreement for the implementation of the Hospital Classroom and Virtual Classroom at the National Rehabilitation Institute.
The hospital pedagogy program was suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic but after three years it will be resumed.
Some pediatric patients require long periods of rehabilitation and it is imperative that they continue their studies.

The Hospital Pedagogy program was created to favor the school continuity of the basic education population that is hospitalized. Its objective is to contribute to raising the terminal efficiency indexes and curricular standards at the preschool, primary and secondary levels.

Support for pediatric patients

With this in mind, Your School in the Hospital represents an educational alternative in the hospital context, with a focus on attention to diversity based on the principles of equity and inclusion, in compliance with the responsibility of the State to guarantee the right to basic education.

Unfortunately it is an initiative that was interrupted during the pandemic. Although after three years it will finally be resumed for the benefit of pediatric patients who must remain for long periods of time in hospitals.

The Ministry of Health (SSa), through the National Institute of Rehabilitation “Luis Guillermo Ibarra Ibarra” (INRLGII)and the Ministry of Public Education (SEP) through the Federal Educational Authority in Mexico City (AEFCM), signed a collaboration agreement for the implementation of the Hospital Classroom and Virtual Classroom.

The ceremony was presided over by the head of the SEP, Leticia Ramírez Amaya, who signed as witness of honor, and the general director of this Institute, Carlos Pineda Villaseñor.

The hospital pedagogy program returns

The head of the SEP affirmed that once the health emergency due to COVID-19 has ended, the reactivation of educational services in high-specialty hospitals in Mexico City, which were suspended due to the pandemic, will be promoted.

For this reason, he added that it should be given boost to hospital pedagogysince it is a very important task for the children who go to the hospitals to receive treatment, continue with their learning, and in this work he thanked the support of the head of the Coordinating Commission of National Institutes of Health and High Specialty Hospitals (CCINSHAE)Gustavo Reyes Teran.

He added that work must be done so that children who receive education in hospitals feel in an environment that is as similar to that of schools, because what unites teaching with medicine is the essence of humanism.

At the INRLGII facilities, the general director, Carlos Pineda, stressed that “the illnesses and injuries that are treated at the institute require long periods of rehabilitation, so it is essential to provide patients with the opportunity to continue their studies through of the Hospital Classroom”.

Where will it be applied?

He explained that there will be three Hospital Classrooms, located in the areas of Labor and Educational Rehabilitation, Pediatric Orthopedics and Pediatric Rehabilitation. Each one will have educational personnel and didactic material.

The AEFCM cares for around 10,000 students annually (19 percent preschool, 56 percent primary, and 25 percent secondary) in health contexts, through 36 Hospital Classrooms, in partnership with 20 institutions, such as the Institute of Security and Social Services of State Workers (ISSSTE), the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), the Health and National Defense Secretariats (Sedena), the Mexico City Health Secretariat (Sedesa), and assistance institutions private (IAP).

Therefore, 36 Basic Education teachers, specialized in Hospital Pedagogy (through training paths designed in the General Directorate of Normal Education and Updating of the AEFCM Teacher Training), guarantee the school continuity of students with controlled non-communicable diseases, prevented from attending a conventional school on a regular basis.
