Derived from uterine fibroids, a 42-year-old woman developed a giant tumor.
At the time of removal, the mass had a weight of 3 kilos with 750 grams.
For the operation, personnel from Gynecology, General Surgery, Nursing, Anesthesiology, as well as the Blood Bank were necessary.

Within the field of health, all types of cases are recorded, although there are some of low incidence that attract attention. One recently occurred at the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) consisted of the extraction of a giant tumor. It was thanks to the work of medical personnel that a satisfactory result was achieved.

Description of what happened

In this sense, within the Regional General Hospital (HGR) No. 1 in Querétaro, a group of specialist doctors successfully performed surgery to extract a Abdominal tumor dependent on the uterus, weighing 3 kilos 750 grams, derived from uterine myomatosis, in a 42-year-old patient.

Dr. José Ramón Rivera Ruiz, a gynecologist at HGR No. 1, pointed out that when Lizbeth “N” arrived at the hospital, a surgical protocol was started in May of this year. However, she was a patient with a history of two previous surgeries, in which the only thing that could be done was a biopsy, due to the adherence that she presented, so she considered unresectable.

“We gave ourselves the task, as a Gynecology service, of giving him a special medication to reduce the flow of fibroids and to be able to perform a third surgery.”

He explained that in the third surgical procedure, the patient presented a bleeding of almost seven literss, where the HGR No. 1 Blood Bank provided eight globular packages, five platelet concentrates, and platelet apheresis. She required the placement of compresses inside the abdomen for 48 hours and had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, to later be operated on again successfully.

Lizbeth noted that she reached a point where her abdomen looked like that of a pregnant woman more than nine months pregnantdue to the size of the tumor.

“When the day of the operation arrived, they took my signs, they injected me; and I put myself in the hands of the doctors. When I woke up I was in intensive care.

Lizbeth’s care was provided by a multidisciplinary medical team (Gynecology, General Surgery, Nursing, Anesthesiology and Blood Bank staff). “I am very grateful to all the doctors who made it possible to save my life,” said the patient.

Lizbeth was discharged from the hospital, after the removal of the giant tumor. He currently maintains his recovery at home with his family.

Other cases in which a giant tumor has been removed

On the other hand, what happened reminds us of other cases in which large tumors have been removed. Just at the beginning of the year, a multidisciplinary team from the Hospital IMSS-Bienestar de Tecuala in Nayarit achieved the removal of a fibroid that was larger than a soccer ball in size and weighed nearly more than 10 kilograms.

While in 2022 Social Security staff managed to remove another giant tumor. Everything was recorded in Chiapas when a lump measuring 15 centimeters in diameter was removed and had invaded the right kidney of a 30-year-old man, which jeopardized his life.
