Meta’s new social network to compete with Twitter, Threads, reached 30 million subscribers on Thursday, less than a day after its launch, the group’s president and chief executive officer, Mark Zuckerberg, announced.

The app, which was launched Wednesday in 100 countries and currently works ad-free, is the biggest threat yet to Twitter, owned by Elon Musk, already weakened for a variety of reasons.

“Wow, 30 million accounts,” Zuckerberg wrote on his account Thursday. “It would seem that we are facing something exceptional, but we still have a lot of work ahead to build the application,” he added.

Earlier he had challenged Musk: “It’s going to take some time, but I think there should be a public conversation platform with more than 1 billion people. Twitter had a chance to do it but it didn’t hit the nail on the head. Hopefully we do.”

And in his first tweet in more than a decade, he posted a meme showing one Spider-Man pointing at another, in an apparent reference to the resemblance between the two social networks.

“We hope (Threads) can be an open and welcoming platform for discussion,” Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri wrote. “If that’s what you want too, it’s best to be nice.”

Demand?

Musk’s reaction to the Threads landing jumped with a lawsuit threat hours after his presentation.

Twitter currently has 556 users worldwide.

In a letter to Mark Zuckerberg published Thursday by online news outlet Semafor, Musk’s lawyer Alex Spiro accused the company of “unlawful misappropriation of Twitter trade secrets and other intellectual property.”

He accused Meta of hiring dozens of former employees of Musk’s company who “had and continue to have access to Twitter trade secrets and other highly confidential information.”

In the evening, Musk retweeted an image that pointed out that the Threads logo resembled a tapeworm. “Also metaphorically,” he added.
