Medical Care at Maisons Médicales: A Practical Alternative to Overcrowded Hospitals

Whether it’s abdominal pain or minor cuts, not all health problems require a visit to the emergency room. Recognizing this, the Ministry of Health has launched an advertisement campaign promoting the care provided by the Maisons Médicales just before the Christmas holidays.

According to Dr. Françoise Berthet from the Ministry of Health, individuals experiencing symptoms similar to a cold or stomach ache that they would normally seek treatment for from their family doctor during the day, should head to a Maison Médicale in the evening or on public holidays. This simple advice aims to divert non-emergency cases away from hospital emergency rooms.

Maisons Médicales, located in Esch, Ettelbrück, and the metropolitan station district, have general practitioners on duty after regular consultation hours. They provide a practical alternative to overcrowded emergency rooms, allowing patients to receive timely care. Unfortunately, a recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Health revealed that a third of residents are unaware of this concept.

In response to the lack of awareness, the Ministry of Health plans to launch a new information campaign to highlight the services offered by the Maisons Médicales. The goal is to ensure residents understand the availability of these medical contact points and utilize them when appropriate.

The opening hours of the Maisons Médicales are straightforward. From Monday to Friday, patients can visit between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. On weekends and public holidays, the Maisons Médicales are open from 8 a.m. until 7 a.m. the following day. After midnight, patients are advised to call the emergency number 112, and depending on the case description, they may be directed to the doctor on duty at a Maison Médicale.

Interestingly, a satisfaction survey conducted by the Ministry of Health revealed positive feedback from visitors. Approximately 79 percent of participants were satisfied with the care they received at the Maisons Médicales, and 73 percent appreciated the short waiting times. Minister Lydia Mutsch hopes that by increasing awareness of the Maisons Médicales through the information campaign, the burden on hospital emergency rooms can be alleviated.

This campaign is part of a broader program aimed at improving workflow in hospitals. Emergency rooms are not only overcrowded at night and on public holidays but also during the day. There are plans for additional political and financial measures, including the provision of more nurses and doctors, better technical equipment, and more efficient work processes.

Lastly, it is crucial to emphasize the role of general practitioners. Approximately 50 percent of patients treated in hospital emergency rooms have minor symptoms that can be effectively and quickly addressed in a general practitioner’s office or a Maison Médicale.
