NATO hopes to register Sweden’s membership at its summit on July 11 and 12, but Ankara is blocking the process.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan knows how to maintain suspense, or rather his room for manoeuvre. The Turkish head of state, whose public statements about Sweden’s entry into NATO have not been much more encouraging in recent days than a year ago, promised on Friday to “to make the best decision for our nation and our security, whatever that may be.” He also wondered “How a country that does not distance itself from terrorist organizations can contribute to NATO” et “How Turkey can trust a country where terrorists run the streets”.
