Blake Mitchell Selected No. 8 by Kansas City Royals in 2023 MLB Draft

by time news

The Kansas City Royals made a bold move on the first day of the 2023 MLB Draft by selecting high school catcher Blake Mitchell with the No. 8 overall pick. Royals scouting director Danny Ontiveros acknowledged the risks associated with drafting high school catchers, as historically, many do not pan out in the majors. But Ontiveros believes Mitchell is a special talent who has the potential to be an impact player.

Mitchell, who hails from Sinton High School in Texas, has showcased his skills both as a catcher and a pitcher. He has a strong arm, impressive power at the plate, and great speed. Throughout his high school career, Mitchell has consistently performed at a high level, winning numerous awards and helping his team to championships.

Ontiveros even compared Mitchell’s hitting ability to that of Bryce Harper when he was an amateur. Mitchell possesses the necessary tools to hit for both average and power from the left side of the plate. He has shown maturity and a keen understanding of the strike zone by taking his walks and avoiding chasing pitches out of the zone.

Defensively, Mitchell is projected to be at least an average receiver and blocker behind the plate. He has a 70-grade arm strength, which he has demonstrated by reaching 97 mph on the mound. His arm allows him to control the running game with quick pop times. While Mitchell is athletic and versatile enough to play in the infield and outfield, the Royals intend to develop him primarily as a catcher.

The Royals also made two other picks on the first day of the draft, selecting prep righty Blake Wolters and outfielder Carson Roccaforte. The team believes they can sign Mitchell away from his LSU commitment for a deal below the slot value of the No. 8 pick, allowing them to allocate their bonus pool money across the remaining rounds of the draft.

The Royals have high hopes for Mitchell and see him as a middle-of-the-order bat with leadership qualities. Only time will tell if Mitchell lives up to these expectations, but the team is confident in his abilities and excited to have him in the organization.
