The Deputy Director General of the Beninese Agency for Rural Electrification and Energy Management (Aberme), Florent Orou Fico, received in audience on April 06 and July 6, 2023, a delegation from the General Association of Residents and Nationals for Oké-Owo development (AGROD), led by Doctor Agognon Wandji Gérard. The goal is to advocate for the rehabilitation of mini-power plants installed in the locality in order to bring the district of Oké-Owo out of obscurity.

For several months now, Oké-Owo, capital of the district of Okpara, in the commune of Savè, department of Collines, has been vegetating in the dark, thus creating enormous difficulties for the populations. And for good reason, the solar network that serves the inhabitants of Oké-owo and the surrounding area has been down and non-functional for nearly two years. A situation, which daily plunges the populations of this locality on the border with Nigeria, into deep darkness that is difficult to live with. Because the Aberme is the structure that deals with the management of lighting in rural areas, its Deputy Director General, Florent Orou Fico, on instructions from the hierarchy, took up the file with a view to provide a solution quickly.

The delegation of AGROD members leaving the hearing

It is in this logic that he received the delegation of the Oké-Owo development association during a working session, in the very presence of the promoters responsible for the rehabilitation of the obsolete infrastructure of the network or the construction of new and their operation. Even if the inhabitants of Oké-Owo think they have been forgotten, DGA Aberme reassured them during this working session that it is not an abandonment. “The government takes the concern to heart. There is a study which made it possible to review the power stations to find out the corrections to be made, ”he told the members of the delegation. He promised to be diligent so that the process already initiated can succeed in concert with the populations of Oké-Owo. “We launched the call for projects for the issue of these mini-power plants. The process has been completed. We selected 4 promoters,” he said. According to the explanations, the Oké-Owo mini-grids, now down, were not in a regulatory framework, so serious work has been done to define their regulatory framework according to the DGA, Florent Orou Fico, who ensures their recognition with the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ARE). According to his explanations, his team is working in this direction. “Aberme officials are therefore counting on the sense of responsibility of the populations of Oké-Owo to wait until the completion of the procedures for the restoration of electricity”, wished the Director of Off-Network Electrification. and public lighting, Roland Pamphille Kpatenon. He also made it clear that a village committee will be installed, which will be their eye in relation to the management of the facilities. Note that the delegation of the border populations of Oké-owo is composed of Hounvidé Séraphin, Dr Gérard Agognon, Faustin Adounsa, Jacques Adounsa, Lambert Yévo etc. Very satisfied with the exchanges, the members of the delegation praised the promptness and the efforts of the officials of the Aberme as well as of the Ministry of Energy and promised to announce this good news to the populations, pending the necessary diligence for the current rehabilitation. The Oké-owo delegation took the same opportunity to thank the officials of Aberme and the highest authorities of the Ministry of Energy as well as the person in charge of the company in charge of the works, and said that it a lot about their availability for a quick response before the international Zogben festival hosted by Oké-Owo from Friday 11 to Sunday 13 August.
