Rhett Lowder Drafted No. 7 by Cincinnati Reds: A Late Bloomer with Impressive Pitching Skills

by time news

Rhett Lowder, a starting right-handed pitcher from Wake Forest University, has been drafted by the Cincinnati Reds as the seventh overall pick in the 2023 MLB Draft. Lowder, who was considered a “late bloomer” in high school, has overcome the odds to become a highly regarded prospect.

When Lowder graduated from North Stanly High School in North Carolina in 2020, he was not initially targeted by clubs for the Draft. However, after a successful season at Wake Forest, where he had a 1.87 ERA with 143 strikeouts in 120 1/3 innings, Lowder’s stock rose. He is now ranked as the sixth overall prospect in the 2023 Draft by MLB Pipeline.

Lowder’s fastball velocity can reach 97 mph, and he also possesses a slider and a changeup, which is rated as one of the best in college baseball. Reds amateur scouting director Joe Katuska praised Lowder’s performance track record and consistent pitch execution, stating that he should be able to move quickly through the minors.

Despite his success, Lowder remains humble and is eager to continue developing his game at the professional level. He looks forward to working with the Reds’ development system to further enhance his skills.

In a memorable final start against LSU in the College World Series, Lowder delivered seven scoreless innings, allowing just three hits. Although LSU ultimately won the game, Lowder’s performance against the top pitching prospect and No. 1 overall pick, Paul Skenes, showcased his talent on a big stage.

Overall, Lowder’s selection by the Reds is a testament to his hard work and determination. He is excited about the opportunity to join a young team and believes it will be a great fit for him.

The Reds also selected right-hander Ty Floyd from LSU as the 38th overall pick and shortstop Samuel Stafura from Walter Panas High School in New York as the 43rd overall pick in the draft.
