India to Purchase 26 Rafale Fighter Jets from France as part of Modernization Efforts
Delhi: In a bid to bolster its military capabilities, India is set to acquire 26 Rafale fighter jets from France. With one of the largest armies in the world, India acknowledges the need to modernize its weapons to maintain its strategic edge.
Over the past few years, India has taken significant steps to upgrade its military equipment. As part of this ongoing effort, India has been procuring modern weapons from various countries across the globe.
Recent reports indicate that India has submitted a formal request to purchase 26 Rafale fighter jets and 3 Scorpene-class submarines from France. Sources suggest that the Ministry of Defense has approved the request and an official announcement is expected to be made during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France this week.
The Indian Navy is set to receive 22 single-seat Rafale Marine aircraft and four training aircraft. These acquisitions come at a crucial time when the Navy insists on the urgent need for new aircraft and submarines due to mounting security challenges across the country.
The Rafale aircraft are anticipated to operate from the aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and Vikrant, which currently house MiG-29s. Additionally, three Scorpene-class submarines will be included in the purchase, as part of Project 75.
The deals are estimated to be worth around ₹ 90,000 crore. The exact cost will be determined once the agreement is signed and contract negotiations are finalized. It is worth mentioning that India is expected to receive a discounted price for the Rafale aircraft, compared to what is typically offered to other nations.
Furthermore, the procurement plans seem to align with India’s ‘Make-in-India’ initiative. The previous purchase of 36 Rafale aircraft from France highlighted the emphasis on local production. It is anticipated that a joint committee will be formed to oversee negotiations and facilitate the transfer of technology.
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to France imminent, a final decision on the deal is expected to be made before his departure. An official announcement regarding the acquisition will be made in the French currency, indicating the significance of this partnership.
