Markus Duesmann is no longer CEO from Audi, a maker of luxury cars from the Volkswagen group. The board approved the resignation of Duesmann, who had been in charge since 2019, on Thursday 6.

In his place, as of September, Gernot Doellner, head of strategy at Volkswagen, will take over. He is a veteran within the group, where he has been since 1993. Doellner was head of products at Porsche and led the Panamera series from 2011 to 2018.

What brought down Duesmann?

According to the news agency ReutersDuesmann faced resistance from the top echelon of Audi, mainly because of the automaker’s commercial performance.

In recent years, Audi has fallen behind between the German BMW and Mecedes-Benz in the dispute for the electric market. Furthermore, Audi’s sales performance in the Chinese market fell short of expectations.

Audi’s strategy for the electric market has not taken off. Initially, it proposed a single electrified model based on combustion engines, and then bet on a complete range with specific platforms for electric vehicles.
