Photovoltaic energy installers, biodiversity specialists, green hydrogen developers, recycling plant operators, offshore wind energy engineers and thus up to a hundred jobs. The demand for specialized work by companies immersed in the midst of the green transition does not find a sufficient supply globally.

“There is an investment in green energy that cannot be carried out due to a lack of talent. It is a drama,” he explains. Juan Luis Aguirrezabal, head of employability at Iberdrola, a company that has just launched the Global Green Employment platform, with the aim of connecting supply and demand for green employment, guiding and training. “As world leaders in renewables, we had this responsibility. It’s a social component part. 25 years ago, when we started our commitment to green energy, they called us lunatics, that we were in science fiction… and look now“Aguirrezábal claims.

20,263 jobs needed

According to a report by the Fundación Biodiversidad España, the country will create between 253,000 and 348,000 green jobs per year until 2030, of which just over 100,000 will be related to renewable energies. The European Union also calculates that 48% of active workers will have to retrain to face these changes.

At the moment, Iberdrola’s platform already reports on the need for 20,263 green jobs in Spain, province to province. Among the companies that have already announced their demands are Applus+, Ingeteam, Schneider, Tecnalia and Eiffage. “We have 23,000 suppliers worldwide that we want to help because they can’t find people to develop their projects. Only at Iberdrola globally are we looking for a thousand staff. It’s not just highly qualified engineers, we’re also in contact with associations of solar panel installers who also need training”, explains Aguirrezábal. This specifies that there will be no job offers from the competition, although the public area of the platform will always serve as an orientation to the entire sector.

Is Global Green a job portal? “No. There are already professionals who do this work. We do not want to engulf their work. We will guide and redirect. Job recruitment companies, including headhunter consultants, will be collaborators. We will develop content that will include a private area and that can end up opening a whole world of e-learning“, Explain.

One of the objectives of the Iberdrola project is to organize the educational and training offer in green energy through its already existing university program. “The clear tendency to go towards specialization, not titulitis. There is a saturation of training offer that, by inertia, many people are trained in skills that have no future. We are going to expand the incidence,” says the director of Iberdrola.

Until the end of the year, Iberdrola has proposed the initial development of the platform in Spain, which includes expansion of content and signing of alliances. As of 2024, it wants to expand it to another 27 countries, where they are already working on the legal, technical and search for those responsible. The most important markets for the group chaired by Ignacio Sánchez Galán are the United States -Iberdrola’s subsidiary is Avangrid-, the United Kingdom -Scottish Power-, Brazil -Neonergía- and Mexico. “As in Spain and the rest of Europe, in USA It is also very difficult for us to find engineers to undertake works”.
