This was stated by the head of the Sexual and Reproductive Health Program, Norma Miño. She added that since 2022, “the pilot test of acceptance and adherence to this contraceptive method was carried out in Misiones, where 773 people opted for this input. The pilot test was carried out in 10 provinces, including Misiones sectioned, to later expand the input to the rest of the national territory, ”she commented.

Meanwhile, from the Ministry of Public Health they observed that implants “are a safe and adequate contraceptive method for almost all people with the capacity to gestate, regardless of their age and whether or not they have had previous pregnancies.”

“Unlike the subdermal implant of a rod that is indicated for adolescents and young people, between 15 and 24 years old, this method is without age restriction. It can be used after childbirth or caesarean section, without altering lactation, and immediately after an abortion. Its use can be suspended at any time the person wishes and fertility is quickly recovered,” explained Miño.

This method “generates great acceptance and satisfaction in adolescents and young people. Which is reflected in the continuity of use. That is, they opt for this contraceptive method again.

Subdermal implants are a type of hormonal contraception. Small flexible rods (one or two, depending on the model) that are placed under the skin, on the inside of the arm, under local anesthesia. They are placed by trained medical and obstetric professionals. They are classified within the long-term contraceptive methods. Depending on the model, they last up to 3 or 5 years. Unlike birth control pills, its effectiveness does not depend on the self-administration of the person using it.

This contraceptive method is incorporated into the vast basket of supplies available to the Sexual and Reproductive Health Program, among which can be found: oral contraceptives (monodrug and combined), injectables (monthly and quarterly), condoms, emergency contraception, IUD Copper T, multiload IUD, IUS and subdermal implants. All of them, available in CAPS and hospitals for free.

“The objective is equity and the reduction of existing inequality gaps, promoting universal and free access to effective and quality contraceptive supplies for the prevention of unintended pregnancies. In this sense, it is very important to disseminate the resources that citizens have to exercise their sexual and (non) reproductive health”, added Miño.
