Nicklas Boija: The Life of an Ambulance Nurse in Västernorrland

by time news

Region Västernorrland’s ambulance nurses were busy throughout the year, performing a total of 36,021 ambulance missions in the county. With around 20 ambulances available every day, emergency help is readily available for those in need. One of the dedicated ambulance nurses who respond to these calls is Nicklas Boija.

Nicklas has been working at the ambulance in Sundsvall for three years and is passionate about his job. He describes his work as the closest thing to being a superhero. “We are a security for people in situations they cannot sort out themselves, and I really love my job. It’s self-fulfilling for me while also benefiting society – an unbeatable combination, I think!” he says enthusiastically.

The diverse nature of the work is something that Nicklas appreciates. While accidents and serious cases of illness are common, they also transport patients between hospitals, especially when specialized care is required at a university hospital. Additionally, they collaborate with air ambulance employees to transport babies in incubators to and from Midlanda. Furthermore, a significant portion of their assignments involve assessments, where they determine if the person needs hospital care or can be helped on the spot. They also encounter individuals who are mentally unwell and provide a source of security for them.

Nicklas recently became a specialized ambulance nurse after studying at Luleå University for a year. Despite the challenges of studying full-time and working part-time, he found it both tough and enjoyable. He appreciated the opportunity to apply his theoretical knowledge in real-life situations. “Being able to further your education while working is a really good benefit, but it’s nice to be done now!” he remarks.

Transitioning from a long career in psychiatry to becoming an ambulance nurse initially felt like a big step for Nicklas. However, with support from his colleagues and the training provided by the ambulance service, he was able to make a successful transition. His previous experience in psychiatry has proven valuable since ambulance nurses often encounter individuals in vulnerable situations.

Nicklas also wants to emphasize the camaraderie within his work group. He describes his colleagues as ambitious and always eager to learn. They support each other during difficult and stressful situations, ensuring that everyone is taken care of.

Contrary to popular belief, summers are just as busy for the ambulance service. Injuries and illnesses occur every day of the year. However, Nicklas finds joy in working during the summer, especially when driving in a car on bright summer nights.

The dedicated work of ambulance nurses like Nicklas Boija in Region Västernorrland ensures that emergency help is available 24/7, 365 days a year. Their hard work and commitment to the well-being of the community truly make them everyday superheroes.
