After the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria in February, the Raesfeld-Erle-Homer community foundation and the Raesfeld council factions called for donations for the victims at the request of the FDP under the keyword “Raesfeld helps”. The result surprised everyone involved.
RAESFELD The severe earthquake disaster in Turkey and Syria affects around 23 million people, most of whom are still suffering from the consequences, according to a statement.
A total of 9,225 euros from 31 private individuals and one company with a single donation of 5,000 euros have been received in the account of the community foundation. At the citizens’ festival for the opening of the new citizens’ park on April 2nd, another 3586 euros were added, it is said. The council of the municipality of Raesfeld has now decided to double the donation sum of 12,811 euros, so that the community foundation can hand over a total of 25,622 euros to the aid organizations active on site. Half of the donation goes to the organizations “Doctors Without Borders” and “Aktion Deutschland Hilft”.

“We would like to thank everyone for the generous willingness to donate during our citizens’ festival in April,” Mayor Martin Tesing is quoted as saying in the announcement. Those involved hope that in this way the suffering of those affected in Turkey and Syria can be reduced and the step back to normality made easier.
The two organizations were deliberately chosen because of their popularity, says Christoph Stephan, FPD parliamentary group leader. He is also happy about the “nice sum” that was raised during the campaign and thanks the community foundation for organizing and handling the collection. He adds that despite the unexpectedly high sum, the factions stuck to their decision to double the amount. Even if there is currently a lot of attention and solidarity with Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia, it is important not to forget the victims of the natural disaster in Turkey and Syria.
