IMSS creates the perfect decalogue to take care of mental health

According to the WHO, 5% of the adult population globally suffers from depression.
Expressing emotions, taking small breaks to activate the body, doing outdoor activities, exercising 30 minutes a day, and getting eight hours of sleep a day are some of the recommendations to achieve proper mental health.
It is also suggested to take breaks of approximately five minutes during times of stress to perform breathing exercises.

Many times, when talking about well-being, the mistake is made of considering only the physical health and forget the mental. It is a common failure that is more serious than it seems because it triggers a series of adversities that can be the beginning of multiple diseases.

Depression keeps on rising

To better understand the current problem, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that 5% of the adult population of the planet suffers from depression. The most serious thing is that when it is not attended to on time it can lead to fatal consequences.

Based on all of the above, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) released a decalogue to care for the emotional well-being of the population and is part of the sectoral campaign Live HEALTHY.

The objective of this initiative is to inform the population about the main actions and tools in mental health care and addiction prevention. For her part, Alejandra Díaz Moguel, a psychologist attached to the Health Project Management Area, presented the ten points for take care of mental health

1. Learn to recognize and express our emotions in a healthy way, without ignoring them.
2. Recognize that emotions such as sadness or fear are natural and fulfill a certain function; however, if we cannot control them and they prevent us from carrying out daily activities, we must seek professional help.
3. Take small breaks during daily activities to perform relaxation exercises and activate the body.
4. Maintain a support network through family and friends.
5. Avoid worrying about things that have not yet happened, and focus on those that we can work on in the present moment.
6. Carry out activities in free time that we like and enjoy, such as reading, painting or playing with a pet.
7. Do 30 minutes of exercise a day, choosing the activity that we like the most: like playing soccer, doing yoga, walking, running, etc.
8. Maintain a balanced diet, avoiding eating in excess or under what is recommended.
9. Try to sleep eight hours a day, without interruptions, to rest your body and mind.
10. Do not self-medicate, or consume substances or remedies without a medical prescription.

Creation of the five minutes of thanks

In addition, to promote prevention and self-care in mental health, the population is promoted “five minutes of thanks”.

It consists of taking a break of approximately five minutes during times of stress to do breathing exercises, stretching, have a coffee, meditate, write to a friend, go for a walk or listen to relaxing music, whether at home, work or school. .

Díaz Moguel highlighted that, as part of the sectoral campaign launched on April 19 of this year, the IMSS informs its beneficiaries about the importance of mental health, self-care strategies and measures to reduce stigma and discrimination.

This initiative is carried out in collaboration with the National Commission on Mental Health and Addictions (CONASAMA), the Institute for Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE) and the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), which joined forces to implement various actions focused on promoting the care of the mental health.
