The Coordinator of Farmers’ and Ranchers’ Organizations (COAG) has presented to the main political parties a document of agricultural proposals that includes more than a hundred concrete measures for the 2023-2027 legislature, in order to protect the middle class of the agricultural sector, as explained by the organization. Specifically, COAG has highlighted that the challenges that the sector will have to face include “profitable prices and increased costs, generational change and digital transformation and climate change”.

The general secretary of COAG, Miguel Padilla, has emphasized that current agricultural production is being “radically” altered by a series of external and internal drivers that may lead to the disappearance of the social and professional model of agriculture. Likewise, Padilla has affirmed that “if the new model of business oligopolies prevails, Spain will walk towards an agriculture without farmers”.

Three lines of action

For COAG, the three strategic lines of action that synthesize the basis of the hundred measures are rooted in the right to healthy food for all people, so that food security is guaranteed; as well as sustainability and efficiency when using resources. Likewise, agriculture, according to COAG, will have to deal with the integration processes of the food chainwhile the organization has called for “fair prices and decent incomes” for people working in the fields.

Along these lines, COAG has claimed to have an adaptation period to take on the “important” changes that will occur, with support in both aid and investment, training and advice. They have also proposed measures linked to production costs, since from the organization they have considered it “essential” to support investments to reduce the energy dependence of agricultural holdings and promote the use of renewable energies.
