The image of politicization that is transmitted with the fights over the General Council of the Judiciary does not correspond to reality. In Spain there are 5,600 Thursdays that issue thousands of resolutions and there is no politicization there. It is one of the reflections of Roberto Blanco Valdsprofessor of Constitutional Law at the University of Santiago and columnist for La Voz, who yesterday gave the inaugural lecture of the second year of the Summer School for the Judiciary in the Marin manor (Bergondo).

Blanco Valds’ presentation, titled The submission of judges to the rule of law and its constitutional guarantees: reflections for the debateaddresses the problems of the judiciary in Spain in the face of attacks by politicians who are in the sphere of the Government and from the nationalist parties, disavowing both the jurisdictional function and the judges.

The professor, who maintains that the twelve members of judicial origin must be appointed by the judges themselves, highlights the excesses that derive from the voracity of the parties, which in his opinion should change the way of acting so that the election of members does not respond to the principle of quotas. That has to end, because it gives a distorted idea of the judiciary, which is much more independent than one might think, he pointed out.

The president of the Superior Court of Xustiza de Galicia, Jos Mara Gmez and Daz-Castroverde, attended the inaugural act of the summer course, in which some seventy judges from all over Spain participate. The conferences analyze the role of the judiciary as a guarantee of the rule of law and the challenges of Justice.

The presentations will be given by the professor of Constitutional Law and vice-president of the Royal European Academy of Doctors, Teresa Freixes Sanjun; the magistrate of the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the National Court Manuel Fernndez-Lomana; the member of the Judiciary Nuria Daz; the professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Barcelona Josep María Castell; the president of the Spanish lawyers, Victoria Ortega; the president of the attorneys, Juan Carlos Estvez; the lawyer of the Council of State and former minister José María Michavila; the former Attorney General of the State Consuelo Madrigal, and the former Vice President of the Constitutional Court Juan Antonio Xiol Ros, who will close the course.
