Shastri is of the opinion that the coach and the captain should also have the opportunity to make an official intervention in the selection of teams in the light of this incident.

Shastri was unhappy with the selectors’ decision to include three wicket-keepers in India’s squad for the 2019 ODI World Cup in England. Shikhar Dhawan, who was injured during the World Cup that day, was replaced by wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. While Dinesh Karthik and MS Dhoni were the two wicket-keepers in the squad, the selectors added another wicket-keeper to the squad. This is what angered Shastri. Shasti said Dhawan should have been replaced by pure batsmen Shreyas Iyer or Ambati Rayudu. It was rumored that such a team selection was made on the part of India at that time as the coach and captain did not have enough opportunity to interfere in the team selection.
