The European Union medicines regulator expanded its investigation into the possible risk of suicidal thoughts associated with a new class of weight-loss drugs after receiving 150 complaints.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is studying all medicines known as GLP-1 receptor agonists after initially focusing on side effects related to Wegovy, Ozempic and Saxenda, from Novo Nordisk A/S, the agency said in a statement Tuesday. The EMA said that it was not clear if the incidents were related to the drugs or to other underlying conditions.

The authority said on Monday it was looking into three adverse events linked to Ozempic and Saxenda after receiving reports from the Icelandic Medicines Agency. The EMA was notified two cases of suicidal thoughts related to drugs, and another related to thoughts of self-harm raised in connection with Saxenda.
Another GLP-1 drug is Eli Lilly & Co.’s Mounjaro, which is only licensed for diabetes. Other companies, such as Amgen Inc. and Pfizer Inc., are developing similar products. The investigation began on July 3 and it is expected to be completed in novembersaid the EMA.
