Despite appearances, the tension does not fall. Two weeks after Nahel’s death, on June 27 in Nanterre (Hauts-de-Seine), and the riots that followed, the July 14 celebration will be under close surveillance.

According to a note that Le Parisien was able to consult, the police fear a rise in tensions and violence compared to a calmer 2022 edition. “Tensions persist and aggressiveness of offenders towards the police is omnipresent in many sensitive neighborhoods,” said this document. The festivities could represent an “opportunity for certain troublemakers to commit new violence”.

Firefighters and police could be targeted

The nights of riots are still on everyone’s mind, barely two weeks after the lull. However, on the evening of July 14, the violence should not reach the level of intensity of the riots. Thefts and looting of businesses should be limited.

The authorities fear that the police, the gendarmes but also the firefighters, symbols of the State, will be targeted as was the case on July 14, 2022. Security measures will be reinforced this Friday, particularly in the districts where the riots were significant.

The police also continue to track fireworks and mortars, the use of which is diverted from their traditional use to serve as weapons. From a decree of July 8the sale, carrying, transport and use of pyrotechnic articles and fireworks are prohibited in the country until July 15 inclusive, with the exception of professionals.

In Paris, the city maintains its traditional pyrotechnic show at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Search, opening of bags, various prohibited objects (glass bottles or motorcycle helmets), reinforcement on the ground of mobile units of the gendarmerie and CRS… a reinforced security device will be deployed. But in the rest of the Paris region, some elected officials preferred to cancel the planned events to avoid reliving the violence.
