These S-Bahn stations in Berlin are being modernized

by time news

Berlin – Longer platforms, additional station entrances, barrier-free expansion: Deutsche Bahn (DB) has announced that more than 50 S-Bahn stations in this city are to be modernized. This is what it says in the framework agreement that it signed with the State of Berlin in mid-December. But which stations should benefit from the improvements? The left-wing traffic politician Kristian Ronneburg asked the Senate. Now he has received an answer from the outgoing State Secretary Ingmar Streese (Greens) – which, however, does not entirely satisfy him.

The federal company and the state had been in talks since 2015, according to the Senate Transport Administration. Individual projects were initiated independently of this. 230 million euros are to be invested by 2032. Half of the money comes from Berlin, the other half from the railway and the federal government. In many cases, however, passengers will have to be patient for a long time – several projects are scheduled to run until 2031.

Demanded for years

The Ostkreuz train station is also on the list, for which a roof over the lower regional platform has been required for many years. The plan approval decision, with which the conversion of the heavily used railway junction was once approved, provides for a roof on tracks 1 and 2. But the DB decided not to protect the growing number of regional and, in the meantime, long-distance train passengers from the wet and hot. The Ringbahnhalle offers enough weather protection, it was said. It is now clear: in 2023 the platform will have a 60-meter-long roof.

There is also construction going on at Westkreuz. The S-Bahn station in Charlottenburg will have a new overpass with barrier-free access by 2028. This opens up the adjoining residential areas from the eastern end of the city platforms. Additional entrances are intended to save passengers detours elsewhere – including at the Kaulsdorf, Nöldnerplatz and Zehlendorf S-Bahn stations. The S-Bahn stations Tegel, Eichborndamm, Karl-Bonhoeffer-Nervenklinik and Alt-Reinickendorf are to be expanded by 2027. Among other things, the platforms will be extended there so that eight-car trains can stop in the future.

“The measures negotiated between the Senate and Deutsche Bahn are the first important steps towards modernizing Berlin’s S-Bahn stations,” praised Linke-Verkehrspolitiker Ronneburg. “Some of the measures that have been required and have been required for a long time, such as the extension of the pedestrian crossing at Kaulsdorf S-Bahn station, in order to improve access to the station.”

On the other hand, those involved would have avoided important decisions. S-Bahn stations such as Raoul-Wallenberg-Straße, where access to a cemetery and social facilities are concerned, are still not completely barrier-free, complained the MP. “Likewise, one could finally have devoted oneself to neglected terminal stations like Ahrensfelde in order to make them an attractive gateway to Berlin. I will therefore advocate further adjustments to the new Senator and DB, the framework agreement should ultimately be updated annually. “

Not only S-Bahn trains stop at Ostkreuz, but also regional and even some long-distance trains. But the platform on the Frankfurt Railway, where the regional express to Potsdam also stops, is still without a roof.

A platform roof receives the lower regional platform at Ostkreuz – according to Bahn 2023.

Also underpasses to the platforms will be renewed: by 2028 in Grünau, Köpenick and Plänterwald, by 2031 in Marienfelde, Neukölln and Tempelhof.

Flyovers are to be modernized at the Biesdorf and Prenzlauer Allee train stations – by 2031.

More benches are planned in Gesundbrunnen (until 2025).
