This Wednesday, July 12, M6 summons new “traitors” for the second season of its summer game, presented by Éric Antoine. A new game in three evenings which can allow him to win the jackpot in the ratings. Indeed, for the channel, this program is that of all records. Remember: last August, The Traitors: Will they be unmasked? ? had awakened the audiences of La Six from their summer torpor, which had then rediscovered the colors that we believed to be eternal… before the arrival of the platforms and the growing disinterest of viewers in linear broadcasting!
This hybrid program, a mixture of psychological role-playing and reality TV, had in fact won the loyalty of some 2.4 million addicts on average. And above all allowed M6 to achieve literally historic performances. Traitors thus achieved nothing less than the broadcaster’s best launch for new entertainment since Loft Story… in 2001. Even stronger: no novelty of its kind has done better on the commercial target, namely the famous French woman under 50, since the creation of the channel in 1987. That is to say if the expectation is great for this new edition, which takes up the devilishly effective fundamentals of the first while promising its share of surprises and innovations.
Inspired by Werewolves of Thiercelieux
Adapted from a Dutch format, the show revolves around mechanics that are furiously reminiscent of a famous board game, The werewolves of Thiercelieuxcreated in 2001 by Frenchmen Philippe des Pallières and Hervé Marly (and itself inspired by the Russian game Mafia) and published by Asmodee.
The players, chosen from personalities (more or less known) from the world of culture, sport or even politics, are gathered in a castle for a few days and divided into two teams, the traitors and the loyal ones. It is up to the latter to investigate and unmask the former before being banished during a stay “punctuated by lies, manipulation and betrayal”, according to the chain. Not to mention psychological tests, which increase the pressure on all the candidates: “In addition to being a game, Traitors is a social experience, analyzes Éric Antoine. It is fascinating and uplifting to see how the feelings or charisma of some influence the decisions of others. »

While season 1, won by Clémence Castel (ex-double winner of the game Koh-Lanta) and David Douillet, had seen 14 participants compete, this second session brought together 18. Among them, the actress Charlotte de Thurkheim, the ex-Miss France Nathalie Marquay (widow of Jean-Pierre Pernaut) and her son Tom Pernaut , the cook Norbert or the youtubeur Tibo Inshape and his girlfriend Juju Fitcats. “A disruptive cast”, according to co-producer David Warren (Studio 89 Productions), who obeys a rule of three dosed to “surprise as much as possible”: “We have a third of personalities known to the general public, a third of strong figures for youth and a third of candidates that the public does not expect to see in the program at all. »
This is the case of Jean Lassalle, who had to work on the body to get him to the Château de Val, in Cantal, where filming took place from March 6 to 16: “I didn’t never been somewhere so backwards as on this show. But I never deflated in front of a challenge, ”said the politician, who still has not found his language of wood. “I hadn’t seen any pictures or read the rules, so much so that it took me days to realize that there were three traitors. But it’s so unimaginable and unpredictable that I got caught up in the game.”

And its slightly Gothic atmosphere, inspired by the saga of a famous little wizard: “For season 1, shot in the Allier, we created an Agatha Christie-style universe. For this season 2, we wanted to push the Harry Potter cursors, ”confirms David Warren. It remains to be seen whether, in this playful version, Voldemort and his traitorous Death Eaters will defeat the loyal magicians.
Two other adaptations in preparation
One thing is certain, however: next season, they will have to face serious competitors. Canal+, to whom the success of traitors undoubtedly gave ideas, indeed acquired the rights of Werewolves of Thiercelieux and preparing the official adaptation. At the controls: comedians Panayotis Pascot and Fary. For its part, Netflix will offer the film adaptation of the board game in 2024. The film, directed by François Uzan, will bring together Franck Dubosc, Jean Reno and Grégory Fitoussi for an adventure Jumanji in the heart of a medieval village.
Traitors will he be devoured by these new Wolves, with a keen appetite and ambitions? We will have to wait a bit to find out. In the meantime, fans will be able to enjoy season 2 of the M6 show and continue the game at the start of the school year: a board game Traitors, based on the show, will be available next September.
