Following the Threads hit, scammers are on the prowl. With ten million new subscribers barely seven hours after it went online, the application of the Meta group (parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram), which wants to compete with Twitter, had a thunderous start.

A perfectly chosen timing, when Elon Musk “is destroying everything” on Twitter, according to many users dissatisfied with the limitations of use of the social network at the blue bird. But for now, Threads is not available in France and the European Union, due to data collection regulations.

A perfect opportunity for developers to deceive users in a hurry to download the new so-called “microblogging” application. On the App Store, the “Threads for Insta” application is number 2 in the social network category and is one of the best ranked free applications, while it is not the one developed by Meta.

The logo of the “fake” Threads application resembles that of the new platform, with an at sign on the background of the Instagram logo.

Developed by SocialKit LTD, the deceptive app also copies the Threads logo with minor details, with a white at sign on an Instagram colors background when the “real” Threads app logo is a white at sign on a black background.

A subscription at 90 euros

As revealed BFM TV, the “Threads for Insta” application offers a different interface from the “real” Threads application as well as different functions. Also, the misleading app claims to use artificial intelligence to come up with thread ideas, which the real app does not offer.

Once the user is deceived, the real danger lies above all in your wallet. If it seems free at first, the application actually offers a free trial period which automatically turns into a paid subscription if there is no termination 24 hours before the end of the trial period.

From the weekly subscription at 2.99 euros to the annual subscription at 89.99 euros through the monthly subscription at 29.99 euros, the application offers different offers to deceive the most naive users.

Despite a good rating of 4.3/5 on the App Store after 1,200 votes, many users have noticed the hoax and denounce it in the comments. “Not the real app be careful”, “Unofficial app that tries to charge you 39 euros”, “I hope I won’t be charged. Scam. “, “Beware huge scam, do not install”.

To avoid being tricked, it is imperative to always verify the identity of the developer and read the comments in detail when downloading an application.
