There will not be the famous interview of July 14. The Élysée announces this Wednesday that Emmanuel Macron will not speak on Friday, as was generally the case on the occasion of the national holiday. The President of the Republic will however do so “in the coming days”, which could coincide with the “100 days of appeasement, unity, ambition and action in the service of France” announced on April 17 by the French president and seen as a reprieve for Elisabeth Borne and her government.

This is not the first time that Emmanuel Macron has dried up what was once the traditional July 14 interview. Since his arrival at the Élysée Palace in 2017, Emmanuel Macron has only participated twice: in 2020, when he announced the wearing of a compulsory mask against Covid-19 and a referendum on the work of the Citizens’ Convention for the climate (but it will not take place); and in 2022, with an interview mainly centered on the war in Ukraine.

Upcoming redesign?

Emmanuel Macron will speak “by the end of July”, “in the format he wishes”, government spokesman Olivier Véran assured on Wednesday. Promised on April 17, the 100 days set for the Borne government to relaunch the five-year term coincides with the date of July 27, but President Macron had nevertheless given an appointment on July 14, in this same speech, for “a first assessment” . Emmanuel Macron, who is currently in Vilnius at the NATO summit, will be in Brussels on Monday and next Tuesday for another summit between the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac). Then he should go to Oceania for a long trip from Saturday July 22.

Many observers anticipate a reshuffle in the coming weeks. Asked about the fate of the head of government, Élisabeth Borne, in the event of a reshuffle, Olivier Véran replied on Wednesday that “the Prime Minister (Élisabeth Borne) is at work, she is at her task”. “There is continuity in the action of the State and the government and I am before you this (Wednesday) morning as the spokesperson for a government which does not reflect on the question of the reshuffle”, a- he added.
