Emotion and anger. Political reactions are unanimous after the death of Philippe, this septuagenarian attacked in front of his home in Vieux-Condé (North) by three young people on the night of July 5 to 6. This retired florist died of his injuries on Tuesday.

According to the first investigations, the victim had left his home around 11 p.m. “due to the noisy presence of these three young people in front of his home,” said the Valenciennes prosecutor’s office. The police had discovered him “lying on the public highway”. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin, elected in the department, denounces an “aggression of nameless cowardice”. “This tragedy will not go unpunished,” he promised.

Many elected officials are asking for a legal sanction. The communist deputy from the North, Fabien Roussel, whose constituency includes Vieux-Condé, castigated “an act of barbarism” and called “extremely harsh justice” in an interview on Europe 1. “This man who was savagely beaten. (…) We cannot let such horror pass, ”he insisted.

Éric Ciotti, leader of the Republicans, also calls for “a penal response to the height”. Same thing for LR MEP Nadine Morano: “Young people with no respect for human life hit a grandfather. It’s called barbarism! »

On franceinfo, the government spokesperson, Olivier Véran, estimated that the death of this “man killed with his fists and feet by a 17-year-old minor attests to this ultra-violence, this uninhibited violence against which we must fight with determination.

Three youths arrested

The three alleged perpetrators were arrested by the police. A 17-year-old boy, suspected of having repeatedly punched and kicked the victim, especially when the latter was on the ground, was charged with “attempted murder” and was taken into custody provisional. Two other young people, aged 18 and 14, were indicted for “failure to prevent the commission of a crime or misdemeanor and failure to assist a person in danger”.

“An abominable lynching”: it is in these terms that the boss of the Socialist Party Olivier Faure described the tragedy. “Nobody should oppose the victims as I read it unfortunately on the part of those who only think of settling accounts on the memory of a man”, deplores on Twitter the deputy of Seine-et-Marne, alluding to the death of Nahel at Nanterre.

On the far right, Éric Zemmour again denounced “Francocide”, a term he regularly uses to designate a “French killer”. The leader of the Reconquest party called on the French to “wake up”.

“Philippe died from beatings inflicted on him by a group of minor criminals. For him, no media indignation: it is up to us to bring the memory of this victim of ordinary insecurity to life, ”wrote the president of the RN, Jordan Bardella, on Twitter.

The mayor of Rambouillet and former presidential candidate Jean-Frédéric Poisson challenged the President of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet on Twitter asking for a minute of silence “to honor Philippe, the florist of Vieux-Condé”.
