Never since records began has so much money been stolen by blowing up ATMs in Germany. As the Federal Criminal Police Office explains in a federal situation report published on Wednesday, the number of attempted or completed demolitions rose to a new record of 496 cases in 2022. That was an increase of 26.5 percent over the previous year.

The total amount of the loot increased by 53.3 percent to 29.9 million euros compared to the previous year. Apparently, the perpetrators were more successful than in the previous year, and the proportion of unsuccessful attempts fell from 51.8 to 39.9 percent.

The ATMs were largely blown up using solid explosives, not as often as they used to be using gas. The Federal Criminal Police Office is concerned about this development because blasting with solid explosives can cause particularly severe damage and expose bystanders to a high level of danger.

The willingness of the automatic sprinklers to use violence against people is also apparently increasing. The BKA had become aware of a total of 128 suspects in connection with ATM demolitions in 2022.

Of 87 suspects who had traveled from abroad, 75 people had their center of life in the Netherlands. The majority of the identified suspects of 50.8 percent have Dutch nationality.

At a “round table on ATM demolitions”, among other things, voluntary precautions by the banks were agreed. Machine rooms would be locked at night, banknotes would be colored if machines were shaken, and the stocks in the machines would be reduced.
