The film achieved a record by taking 11 statuettes at the Oscars the year after its premiere, which included best picture, best director, best cinematography, best editing, best art direction-set decoration, best costume design, Best Original Dramatic Score, Best Original Song, Best Sound, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Visual Effects.

It goes without saying that we are referring to Titanic, the James Cameron film that marked a turning point in the industry, with a story that made the world fall in love and raised all kinds of theories about what happened to the classic ship. The same thing happened in recent days at a time when the tragic incident suffered by the Titan submarine, belonging to the OceanGate company, was known.

After 25 years of the original premiere of the film, the scenes do not stop being revisited by enthusiastic fans, and one of the most questioned is the alternative ending that was released some time later, which many consider as something “not serious”. taking into account the tone in which the script was handled, destroying what its director once thought.

As the film ends, viewers witness a scene in which a 100-year-old Rose (Gloria Stuart) smiles as she throws the valuable diamond overboard. After throwing the jewel into the water, she returns to her cabin and passes away peacefully in her sleep. As photographs illustrating the protagonist’s life are shown, the film ends by showing the ship before the disaster, with passengers greeting young Rose (Kate Winslet) as she meets Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio). However, the original ending envisioned by Cameron was markedly different.

One of the scenes from the alternate ending of Titanic

In said alternative outcome, the survivor, already in advanced age, approaches the prow of the ship that allowed her to witness the expedition to the Titanic. Just before what could be construed as a suicide attempt, she actually has the sole purpose of throwing her precious jewel into the sea, at which point she is interrupted by her granddaughter Lizzy and the investigators responsible for her. When she reveals that she still possessed that personal treasure, the incredulous face of scientist Brock Lovett becomes undeniable.

She would reveal a phrase that was marked in this new epilogue: “The most difficult thing about being so poor was being so rich. But every time I thought about selling it, I thought of Cal. And somehow I managed to survive without her help.” But the man’s response leaves viewers more speechless: “I don’t know what to say to a woman who tried to jump off the Titanic when she wasn’t sinking and then got back on when she was.”

The woman is sure of what she is about to do, explaining that it is something that, deep down, is where she belongs. However, she fulfills a wish of the investigator first, as she can even have the jewel in her hands for a few seconds, which leads to another reflection of hers: “You are looking for treasures in the wrong places, Mr. Lovett. Life alone is priceless and makes every day important”, recalling Jack’s words.

He finally understands Rose’s words and does not resist, and that is where she, with a small mocking gesture, throws the jewel, leaving everyone speechless and speechless. Well, almost everyone, because Lewis Bodine, another of the expedition participants, runs to the railing and yells in her face: “That was very bad, ma’am!”

They all start laughing, they got Rose’s message. Less so the viewers, who from the moment this alternative version of the ending came to light, which was in the director’s head for so long, did not stop questioning it, both because of the grotesqueness of the situation and because of dirtying the outcome that It hit theaters all over the world.
