Power Outage Leaves Thousands Without Electricity in Vimmerby Municipality

Wednesday evening brought a massive power outage to several areas in Vimmerby municipality, leaving thousands of customers without electricity. The outage, which occurred at 19:15, initially affected over 5,000 customers in Vimmerby, Frödinge, Tuna, Storebro, and Mariannelund.

According to EoN’s outage map, the power outage primarily impacted customers living in these areas. By 19:30, the number of affected customers in Vimmerby municipality dropped to 2,323. This number further decreased to 1,632 households at 8 p.m., and 1,255 households at 8:15 p.m.

Vimmerby Energi & Miljö AB (VEMAB) revealed on its website that the power outage was caused by issues with the overhead network. “EoN is working hard to reconnect the network in order to restore power,” stated VEMAB.

Unfortunately, there is currently no estimate as to when all customers will have their power restored.

Updates:

At 20:50, it was reported that there were still 639 customers without power in Storebro, Pelarne, and Rumskulla. However, customers in Vimmerby, Tuna, and Frödinge had their electricity restored.

By 21:15, VEMAB posted on its Facebook page that they were facing difficulties starting up the heating system. This posed a problem for customers who may experience a lack of hot water and heating. VEMAB assured its customers that the staff on call were working diligently to resolve the issue.

At 21:45, Patric Elmén from EoN’s press service confirmed that a fuse in the Mariannelund station caused the power outage at 7:17 p.m. Elmén explained that the electricity network was interconnected and, thus, customers were being gradually connected back to the grid. At that time, 350 customers in Vimmerby municipality and 946 customers in Mariannelund were still experiencing the power outage. Elmén anticipated that all customers would have their power restored within half an hour.

The cause of the power outage remains unknown. Elmén speculated that it could be due to various factors, such as a branch falling on the wires, an animal getting too close to the wires, or some other issue with the overhead network.

Finally, at 21:55, it was reported that power had been successfully restored to all customers in Vimmerby municipality and Mariannelund.
