The importance of the act recovered lies in the fact that the first statement was lost without trace and this is one of the few copies that have survived.

Argentina recovered an original form of its declaration of independence from Spain in 1816, through an operation carried out by the General Directorate of Customs (DGA) to rescue historical documents, according to what was known this Monday in an act held at Customs.

In the presence of the Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa; the federal administrator, Carlos Castagneto; and the General Director of Customs, Guillermo Michel, revealed the details of the discovery of this historical document.

It is one of the 1,500 certified copies of the handwritten document signed by the representatives of the then United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, which were sent to different parts of the country and the world to announce their emancipation from the Spanish crown.

The importance of this act lies in the fact that the first declaration was lost without trace and few copies -considered original today- have survived in the last 200 years of Argentine history.

“It is clear that in the independence of the Argentine economy, Customs has a central role. Each customs office, each customs officer is the first arm of the State: they are showing us that they are at the service of our country,” said the head of Economy and candidate official to the Presidency.

Customs, which depends on that portfolio, recovered the document from a virtual bookstore specialized in the sale of ancient texts based in Buenos Aires, after an exchange of information with the Ministry of Culture of Peru.

The Peruvian government had denounced the theft of a book from the year 1772 from the San Antonio Abad National University of Cusco, which was also found in the operation and returned to the Andean country.

“The recovery of this document means an act of national sovereignty, care for the collective memory of our nation and is a primary source for historical research,” Michel said.
