New Research Calls for Updates to Disease Management Program for Coronary Heart Disease
Cologne – The Disease Management Program (DMP) for coronary heart disease (CHD) is in need of an overhaul to align with current guideline recommendations, according to research conducted by the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG).
The DMP guideline for CHD was last updated by the Federal Joint Committee in November 2019. However, IQWiG’s research reveals that there have been significant developments in health care aspects since then, necessitating the need for updated recommendations.
The research highlights new diagnostic criteria for defining the target group, individual therapy planning, medical check-ups, therapeutic measures, and the initiation of rehabilitation measures. These updated recommendations aim to improve the overall management and treatment of CHD patients.
One significant change in the updated recommendations is with regards to physical activity for CHD patients. The guidelines now emphasize new information on how patients should be trained in dealing with their disease, providing them with better tools to manage their condition effectively.
IQWiG’s final report, which serves as the scientific basis for the updates to the DMP guideline, is based on the evaluation of twelve evidence-based medical guidelines on CHD. The institute’s research aims to ensure that the management and treatment of CHD align with the latest scientific advancements and best practices.
The need for an updated DMP guideline is pressing as CHD remains a major health concern in Germany. In 2020, chronic CHD was the leading cause of death, claiming the lives of more than 75,000 individuals. Furthermore, 44,500 people suffered an acute fatal heart attack, underscoring the urgency to improve the management and treatment of this condition.
Approximately 4.4 million individuals sought treatment from panel doctors for CHD in 2018 alone, highlighting the widespread impact of this disease on the German population.
The findings from IQWiG’s research are expected to prompt relevant authorities to review and update the DMP guideline for CHD, ensuring that patients receive the most effective and up-to-date care.
