“I am from the Progreso parish and I am leaving very grateful to all the doctors and graduates who have taken care of me. He bit me on the foot by a snake while working. My family decided to bring me to the hospital so that they can treat me”, expressed Josué Q. recipient of the medical attention.

The Dr. José Daniel Rodríguez Maridueña Infectious Diseases Hospital, of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), offers specialized care in this type of case. To restore the patient’s health, after evaluation in the emergency area and hospitalization, the application of 12 units of antivenom serum was carried out, which neutralized the effects of the reptile’s venom.

Snakebites occur more frequently in rural areas during the rainy season and in places with abundant vegetation. They must be treated within the first 24 hours. It is also vital that the appropriate medication is applied to avoid negative health consequences.

The multidisciplinary team of the surgical center of the Infectious Diseases Hospital performed a deep cleaning procedure on the foot on three occasions, due to the fact that it had an infectious process.

When faced with a snake bite, professionals recommend staying calm, immobilizing the affected area with a bandage, avoiding agitating or moving so that the venom does not spread, not applying home treatments and trying to identify the type of snake.

After hospital discharge, Josué will receive care at an MSP health center closest to his home, where his health will be monitored and controlled.

The Ministry of Health works permanently in actions and preventive days of snake bites throughout the year, especially in winter times. In this sense, he suggests the use of boots, keeping doors closed and avoiding exposing yourself.
