The cardboard beds in the village during the Tokyo Games had fueled many conversations, with many athletes sharing photos and videos on social networks. These Airweave brand box springs will make their big comeback in Paris in a year, the Japanese firm having responded to the call for expressions of interest.

“We are very happy to be in France, in the country where Pierre de Coubertin created the Olympic Games”, explains Montokuni Takaoka, Chairman and CEO of Airweave, with a broad smile. The sympathetic Japanese boss, whose company will supply bed bases, mattresses, pillows and duvets for 16,000 athletes, is rather proud of the technology of his products. The box springs are made of recycled cardboard and will be made in France. The duvets are reversible: a blue side for the Olympic Games, a green side for the Paralympic Games (athletes can leave with it). As for the mattresses, which come from Japan, they are “breathable and resistant to body pressure. »

According to a study, sleeping on this type of mattress would allow athletes to improve their performance. The mattresses, in size 90 x 200 cm – that Teddy Riner is reassured, it is possible to add a block and push the length to 220 cm – come in 3 blocks. “The mattresses are customizable,” boasts the entrepreneur.

Depending on the height, weight and skeleton of the sportsman who, on arriving at the village, will pass in front of a machine that will take his measurements. This will then indicate the best combination for him: soft, moderate, firm or extra-firm… The firmness of each block varies from side to side. The athlete can then arrange them as he pleases which, according to the company, will ensure him a real restful sleep.

Olympic and Paralympic Games Unity in a Duvet

In Tokyo, this system was already offered, but Montokuni Takaoka admits that the system, with a zip, was impractical. The company has therefore improved it, this time with a fitted sheet, which all you have to do is remove to arrange the three blocks as you wish. Like Tony Estanguet, patron of the Games, present during the presentation, we tested the bed.

Like the athletes in Tokyo (but with less ease), we jumped on the mattress to realize the solidity of the cardboard box spring (it will be white, according to the choice of the Athletes’ Commission). Montokuni Takaoka promises “that by putting in 5 people”, the bed resists. History to limit the risks, we jumped to three people at the same time. Without incident.

The 3-block mattress also keeps its promises, even if we only spent a few minutes on the mattress. Our favorite ? The heads or tails duvet, symbol of the unity of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
