Before the Olympic Games, a single watchword: adapt. The traditional July 14 parade will not take place on the Champs-Élysées in 2024. The military parade will exceptionally take place between Vincennes at Place de la Nation, Emmanuel Macron said this Thursday evening in front of the armed forces.

“The Olympic flame will light up our parade,” said the Head of State during his speech at the Hôtel de Brienne, a year before this major sporting event.

A change of route linked to technical constraints, since the Place de la Concorde will be occupied by the urban events of the Olympic Games, which will start on July 26. The usual route is therefore not possible in 2024.

Regular changes before the 1980s

This is not the first time that the July 14 parade has not taken place on the Champs-Élysées. As the Ministry of the Armed Forces specifies, “it was not until 1980 that the ceremony was definitively fixed” on the famous avenue. Before that, it was first held at the Longchamp racecourse. It was in 1919 that he arrived for the first time on the Champs, echoing the Great War.

After the Second World War and until 1980, the location of the celebration changed regularly. In the 1970s it took place in eastern Paris, but also twice between Bastille and République – sometimes in one direction, sometimes in the other. At the end of this same decade, the celebrations took place in front of the Military School. More recently, the Covid-19 had forced another major change since the parade was canceled in 2020, and was replaced by a simple ceremony at Place de la Concorde.
