The Tel Aviv “Animix” festival – the international festival for animation, comics and cartoons will be held this year for the 23rd time.

The festival, which will open on August 8 at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque and will continue until the 12th of the month, will present a five-day program of full-length animated films, compilations of short films for adults and children, exhibitions on a wide variety of topics and more.

This year the festival joins the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Disney animation studios with the screening of iconic Disney films, lectures and workshops.

This year the festival will also deal with the climate crisis in which a new Israeli film called “Island” by the painter and animator Michael Faust, the painter of the masterpiece “Legend of Destruction”, will be shown. The film won the Annecy festival – the largest animation festival in the world.

Also, a tribute will be held at the festival to the two cultural giants Yonatan Gefen and Meir Shalu who passed away this year: “Fruit of the Vine” – a special program for the festival that presents the wide range of work of Yonathan Gefen as a writer, playwright, songwriter and satirist and “Meir Panis” – an illustrated tribute to the writer Meir Shalu that in the coming days his new and last book with illustrations by Michel Kishka is expected to appear.

Another exciting tribute and recognition event will be dedicated to the veteran voice actor of animated characters in Israel, Albert Cohen, who voiced in Hebrew Sammy the fireman, his assistant, Captain Cook, the drunken goose from “Cats at the Top”, the magician Merlin in “The Sword and the Stone” and dozens of other well-known and beloved characters.

On the occasion of Cohen’s 90th birthday, the festival will hold a special tribute program in which other well-known dubbing artists will participate: Sarit Vino Elad, Alon Neuman and Ohad Shahar.

The festival will also refer to current events and the issue that has occupied Israeli society for the past six months, with the program and exhibition “Draw me a protest!” – lines for the image of the mass protest that swept Israel in 2023.” In the framework of it, the questions will be discussed to what extent the visual protest affects? Are there lines and limits for an illustrated demonstration and more, with the small stories behind the large demonstrations at the gathering of creators on the occasion of the great protest for the defense of democracy.
