In a bid for justice and safety, fashion designer Tameka Foster, the ex-wife of R&B singer Usher, has launched an online petition requesting the draining and restoration of Lake Lanier in Georgia. This plea comes in light of the tragic accident that took the life of Foster’s 11-year-old son, Kile Glover, who was struck by a jet ski while floating on an inner tube in the lake back in July 2012.
Having garnered over 3,000 signatures, Foster’s petition aims to highlight the urgency of improving safety measures at the lake. She believes that draining the massive reservoir is necessary to remove hazardous materials and to implement enhanced safety protocols for all individuals engaging in personal watercraft and recreational activities.
Kile Glover’s untimely demise prompted a conviction for Jeffrey Hubbard, the family friend operating the jet ski, who was found guilty of homicide by vessel. He received a prison sentence of four years along with 15 years of probation.
Delving deeper into the issue, it becomes evident that the lake has a history of boat collisions due to heavy traffic. Reports from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources reveal that more than 170 boating and drowning deaths occurred between 1994 and 2018. Foster argues that the construction of the 73-year-old man-made lake, which partially flooded the predominantly black community of Oscarville, may affect the water’s currents, posing a significant danger to recreational users.
Lake Lanier, spanning 44 miles northeast of Atlanta, not only serves as a popular getaway spot but also provides drinking water for approximately 5 million people. Moreover, the Buford Dam located at the lake’s southern end generates hydroelectric power for the metro Atlanta area, underscoring the importance of ensuring its safety and regulation.
Foster’s proposal not only seeks to honor the memory of those who have lost their lives but also aims to prevent future tragedies by implementing stricter regulations and zoning for water-related activities. By draining, cleaning, and restoring Lake Lanier, Foster believes that it will create an opportunity to safeguard lives and ensure the well-being of all who visit the lake.
Tameka Foster and Usher divorced in 2009 after two years of marriage, during which they had a tumultuous relationship. The couple shares two sons, Usher Raymond V and Naviyd. The tragic accident occurred amidst their fierce custody battle.
It remains to be seen whether Foster’s plea will garner the attention and action necessary to address the safety concerns surrounding Lake Lanier. As the grieving mother continues to fight for justice and honor the memory of her son, the fate of Georgia’s largest lake hangs in the balance.
