According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Indonesia, the 56th Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) discussed the situation in Vietnam. East Sea and expressed concern about land reclamation activities, serious incidents in the area, which erode trust, increase tensions and may undermine peace, security and stability in the region.

In a joint statement released two days after their meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Ministers reaffirmed the need to strengthen mutual trust and confidence, and to refrain from conducting activities that may complicate or escalate disputes and affect peace and stability, while avoiding actions that may further complicate the situation.

ASEAN reaffirms the need to pursue peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with generally accepted principles of international law, including United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in 1982, while emphasizing the importance of demilitarization and self-restraint in conducting any activities that may further complicate the situation and escalate tensions in the South China Sea.

The Ministers also emphasized the importance of fully and effectively implementing the entire Declaration of the Parties in the East Sea (DOC); welcomed the progress made in the negotiations on a Code of Conduct in the South China Sea (COC) effective and substantive, consistent with international law, including UNCLOS, while emphasizing the importance of taking precautionary and confidence-building measures to enhance trust and confidence between parties./.
