For three consecutive days, the electoral boards and prosecutors of political parties from all over the country have carried out a review of the results, following an order from the Constitutional Court, the country’s highest court, in an unprecedented controversial decision issued on July 1, which has been criticized by international observers.

Challenges to be resolved in the capital

This Thursday afternoon, the hearings to compare the electoral records of Guatemala City and the municipalities of the country’s metropolitan district continue.

The greatest incidences are reported in the mayoral election of the capital, where there are pending challenges to be resolved and there is a narrow difference in votes between the current mayor Ricardo Quiñonez, of the right-wing Valor-Unionista alliance, and the candidate Roberto González, of the conservative Creo party. .

According to political party prosecutors consulted, the review of votes should end this Thursday, after three days of hearings.

For its part, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) reported that the results could be made official next week, when the records are received and the corresponding updates are made.

Various analysts, politicians, and experts have warned that the vote review measure, requested by nine traditional parties, may have the objective of delaying the officialization of the results and thus suspending the second round of presidential elections, scheduled for next August 20.

If the results are confirmed, in the runoff the former first lady Sandra Torres Casanova, from the National Unity of Hope (UNE) and the academic Bernardo Arévalo, from the Seed Movement, who surprisingly slipped into the second place on June 25.
