After Jair Bolsonaro’s testimony given to the Federal Police (PF) on Wednesday (12), Senator Marcos do Val is due to appear at the same body on Wednesday (19) to explain the coup d’état plan that supposedly it involves ex-deputy Daniel Silveira, arrested since February, the ex-president and the senator himself, who asked for removal from office citing medical reasons.

About a month ago, on June 15, the PF obtained authorization from Alexandre de Moraes, minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), to carry out a search and seizure operation at three of the senator’s addresses: a residence in Vitória, ES , a domicile in Brasilia and the office on the 18th floor in Annex 1 of the Senate. The operation was carried out on the politician’s 52nd birthday.

The senator is investigated for attempted coup d’état and is suspected of obstructing the investigation of Atos Coupistas, as well as for disclosing confidential documents and for publishing offenses and threats to the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

The police visit resulted in the apprehension of a bag containing the senator’s computer, cell phone, pen drives and documents.

What led the PF to carry out an operation against Val?

On February 1, a Wednesday, Marcos do Val participated in a live with members of the Movimento Brasil Livre (MBL) in which he said: “I got pissed when they called me a Bolsonarista. And you wait: I’m going to drop a bomb. On Friday, Veja will show Bolsonaro’s attempt to coerce me so that I could carry out a coup d’état together with him. Of course I reported it”. The information caused an uproar in the media and the next day there were developments.

Marcos do Val told the magazine, in an interview published on February 2, that he participated in a meeting with the former president and former deputy Daniel Silveira on December 9 last year.

The plan consisted, according to Val, at Bolsonaro’s initial request, to record conversations with Minister Alexandre de Moraes, the president of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE). The objective was to obtain flagrantes or something that would incriminate the minister in order to annul the elections, since the Bolsonaro administration sought to undermine the national electoral process.

The senator announced that he would resign, but he did not comply with the proposal.

Marcos do Val testifies to the PF about the meeting with Bolsonaro and Silveira on February 3. The testimony lasted about four hours and the senator changed the initial version. He attributed the plan to record minister Alexandre de Moraes to then-deputy Daniel Silveira. However, the senator stated that Bolsonaro never opposed the plan.

In his testimony, do Val was complicated by not remembering the place of the meeting, sometimes it would have been at the Jaburu Palace, sometimes at the Alvorada Palace or at the Planalto Palace. In June, the senator was the target of a search and seizure operation by the PF after disclosing confidential information from a report by the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (ABIN) on his social networks on June 12.

What did Bolsonaro say to the PF in the last statement?

On Wednesday, former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) testified to the PF about the case, as a witness, and confirmed that he attended a meeting with Senator Marcos do Val and Daniel Silveira on December 8 of last year. He stated, however, that “nothing was dealt with”, denying that they had discussed a coup plan. “Let him answer for his actions,” said Bolsonaro about Marcos do Val.

According to the former president, the meeting with Val and Silveira lasted about 20 minutes and took place at the Alvorada Palace. He said he was never close with Senator Marcos do Val. Fabio Wajngarten, Bolsonaro’s lawyer and adviser, told journalists that “the name of Minister Alexandre de Moraes was never mentioned, much less any attempt to record it with the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF)”.

The former president also pointed out that, at the time the meeting was held, there was the possibility of senators changing parties, “and nothing more than that”.
