Tamil Nadu’s father-son duo, K.K. Shankar and Senthil Shankar’s contribution is very special. He recycles 1.5 million plastic bottles every day in his company, Sri Renga Polymers.
These bottles usually end up in landfills after use. He has found a brilliant way to solve this serious issue. He is making fashionable clothes from this vest in his company.
Of. After graduating from IIT, Shankar worked abroad for many years. In 2008, he returned to India and started working on the problem of plastic waste. He started a company named Shree Renga Polymers which used to make carpets from industry waste.
For many years he recycled plastic in this way. Now his son, Senthil Shankar, is taking it a step further and turning plastic waste into sustainable fashion. Senthil has launched a clothing brand named EcoLine in the year 2021.
In this, he is collecting empty plastic bottles from 50,000 waste pickers across the country and making things like T-shirts, paints and blazers. In this way, he has so far saved about 50 lakh plastic bottles from going to the landfill.
He uses 8 plastic bottles to make a shirt and about 20 bottles to make a jacket. His brand became more famous when in February 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi wore a jacket made by him in Parliament to promote the sustainable brand EcoLine. That jacket was made by recycling 25 plastic bottles. The Prime Minister wore it in Parliament as well as in Japan and Australia.
Senthil says, “We are very happy that the brand we have worked so hard for has received national and international recognition. After that event, there has been a 25 percent increase in the sales of our products.”
At present, the price of the products made by him is between 500 to 6000 rupees. Today, he is earning an annual turnover of Rs 12 crores through 20,000 orders every month.
They get most of their orders from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh.
