The Business Advisory Council met on the morning of Thursday, July 13, to express its support for the institutions that oversee the republican system and democracy in Guatemala.

Concerned by recent events, representatives from various business areas called for respect due process and guarantee the rule of law as fundamental pillars of the legal system of the country.

The current circumstances classified as historical, once again warrant that the business union, as in other circumstances, express its full support to the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), as rector of the electoral processand the Constitutional Court (CC), as guarantor of the constitutional order, informed the Council.

The representatives of the private sector analyzed the national situation and evaluated the different scenarios to support the institutions that oversee the governance of Guatemala.

The delay in making the voting results official

The first round of the elections was held on June 25, but the officialization of the results was delayed a few days due to legal appeals raised to review the scrutiny.

Other legal actions were then filed, but were rejected. However, on Wednesday, July 12, the Public Ministry, minutes before the voting was made official, announced that a court ordered the Suspension of the legal status of the Seed Movementthe second most voted party in the 2023 General Elections.

The Supreme Electoral Tribunal reported on Thursday that it had filed two amparo petitions against that resolution. Meanwhile, the Semilla party also went to the Constitutional Court and the CC complied with his request and annulled the decision of the Seventh Court that ordered the suspension of the legal status of the organization.

The provisional ruling of the aforementioned Court restored confidence in the electoral process and everything indicates that the obstacles to the second round of elections on August 20 will be disputed by Sandra Torres from UNE and Bernardo Arévalo from Semilla.

The will of the people must prevail

The message of the Business Advisory Council is clear: the republican system must prevail over any particular interest and the popular will expressed at the polls on June 25 must be respected.

In this sense, it supports the decision of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal to make official the results of the first round of the General Elections and to continue the process to elect the next president of Guatemala.
