Syphilis Cases on the Rise in Lincoln-Lancaster County, Health Officials Warn

LINCOLN, Neb. – The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department released a concerning report stating that syphilis cases are on the rise in the area. Health officials also revealed that this alarming trend is being observed statewide and nationwide.

According to the report, in Lancaster County alone, the case rate has surged from approximately three cases per 100,000 people in 2017 to 13 cases per 100,000 people in 2022, representing an alarming 333% increase. The majority of cases were found in individuals between the ages of 20 and 39. In Nebraska overall, there has been a staggering 373% increase in syphilis cases since 2017, as indicated by a health alert issued by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that can have severe consequences if left untreated. While early symptoms may include skin lesions, many individuals infected with the disease are unaware of their condition. Pregnant individuals with syphilis can pass the infection to their babies, leading to a condition known as congenital syphilis (CS), which can result in serious health problems for newborns.

Tim Timmons, the Communicable Disease Program Supervisor with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, emphasized the importance of prevention and treatment. “Syphilis is preventable through the use of condoms and treatable with appropriate medication obtained from a healthcare provider,” he said. “Since not all individuals with syphilis exhibit symptoms, testing plays a crucial role along with receiving necessary treatment upon diagnosis.”

To address this growing concern, the health department’s sexual health clinic offers convenient and confidential exams and STI testing. Walk-ins are welcome, and appointments can be made by calling 402-441-8065. Additional testing and treatment options are available at various locations throughout the community.

For further information on syphilis, individuals can visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website. It is vital to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect one’s health and that of the community.
