The Rheingau region

In this country, the Rhine only changes direction once; instead of south to north, it flows a good 30 kilometers from east to west in the Rheingau, up to 900 meters wide with river meadows. A whim of nature that ensures that these river slopes on the right bank of the Rhine are automatically on the sunny side.

In the back lies the protective Taunus with the up to 619 meter high Rheingau Mountains. Ideal conditions for viticulture, the first vines were already cultivated around 800 AD by monks and lords of the castle. Magnificent medieval buildings tower over the Rhine, such as Vollrads Castle, Schwarzenstein Castle or Johannisberg Castle; from Rüdesheim, the Unesco World Heritage Site of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley begins here.

The Rheingau between Walluf, Eltville, Rüdesheim and Lorch looks like a Mediterranean cultural landscape. Everything takes place outdoors in the summer, and there are open-air events for all tastes: superlatives include the biggest Harley-Davidson meeting Europe with hard rock in Rüdesheim and that taking place everywhere Rheingau Music Festival with 170 concerts (until September 2nd).

Rheingau visitors don’t need a car, which would not be recommended either, because wine tastings lure you around almost every bend in the road. The towns are well connected by train, alternatively there are many passenger ships and ferries on the Rhine.

The treasure in the Eberbach monastery

Its columned hall is known from “Game of Thrones”, the monks’ dormitory from “The Name of the Rose” with Sean Connery, and flickering candlelight tours take you down to the wine tasting in the cabinet cellar. The more than 900-year-old former Cistercian monastery in Eberbach, romantically framed by forest and vines in the Kisselbach Valley, is the largest and most famous winery in Germany. It belongs to the state of Hesse.

His globally unique treasure lies in the secret hospital cellar: thousands and thousands of ancient, perfectly matured wines, all vintages without gaps from 1890, are stored under the vaulted arches; the oldest treasure dates from 1706. A dream for wine fans. An employee only takes care of corking the historic bottles.

coffee and kneads

From Walluf to Lorchhausen, a good 250 taverns and taverns open in summer. Definitely try for a snack: homemade “Wingertsknorze” – these are twisted breadsticks that look like gnarled rootstocks in the vineyard, which is also called Wingert locally.

Perfect for dipping another specialty: Spundekäse made from cream cheese, creamy quark and sweet paprika powder. A Wisper trout smoked over beech wood is also a popular option, and it is found only in the mineral-rich Wisper River, which flows into the Rhine. It is so clear that reintroduced salmon from the Atlantic also spawn there.

There is a classic for the coffee break: Rüdesheim coffee in the tall original porcelain cup with pink lettering, the Hessian answer to Irish coffee, so to speak. Topped with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles, flambéed with Asbach-Uralt brandy from Rüdesheim. This goes well with homemade “squeeze cake” with plums.

Eltville is the center of rose cultivation

22,000 roses climb in Eltville, the city of roses on the Rhine. In June, these rose bushes bloom in all colors, filled and unfilled, fragrant rarities and multicolored new breeds, more than 350 varieties.

During guided tours through the rose garden of the electoral castle, gardeners give tips for the garden at home; and the red beet rose “Stadt Eltville” is a popular souvenir. If you don’t have a green thumb: rose petals are also available here in lemonade, honey, as tarts and ice cream.

The quote

„A good Hock keeps Away the doc!“

A good Hochheimer makes the doctor superfluous – this quote is attributed to Queen Victoria (1819-1901). A “Hock”, as the Brits used to call Riesling, was their favorite wine after their visit to Hochheim in the Rheingau in 1845.

A “Königin-Victoriaberg” named after her has since provided the Windsors with excellent Riesling, the purveyor to the court is the winemaker Reiner Flick. This “hock” has been a taste of the royal family for two centuries. At the banquet for Charles III. at Schloss Bellevue there was – of course – a 2018 Königin-Victoriaberg-Riesling dry in 2023.

Welcome to the Bottleneck Free State

A historical curiosity in the Rheingau ended 100 years ago, as evidenced by several roadside signs: From 1919 to 1923, the area around the small Rhine town of Lorch was a no man’s land. Because the French and Americans had drawn their zones of occupation on the Middle Rhine with a compass; Due to the cartographic negligence, an area was left out and unoccupied – on the map in the form of a bottleneck.

A “passport” as a souvenir with a historical background: in 1919 the mayor of Lorch proclaimed the “Bottleneck Free State”.

In an emergency, the mayor proclaimed the “Bottleneck Free State” and had his own banknotes printed with the slogan “It’s nowhere nicer than in the Bottleneck Free State”. There was a lot of smuggling until the French ended neutral self-government. As a tourist reminder, there is now the “Freistaat Flaschenhals” passport with discounts from winegrowers and restaurateurs.
