NVIDIA would be accelerating the production of the H800 for the Chinese market at the expense of the A800

Among the vetoes that the US has established in its technological war with China is the export of high-powered graphics cards for computing that include US technology. That includes accelerators like NVIDIA’s H100, which led the company to develop trimmed versions for the Chinese market like the A800 and H800. But even with trimmed versions, the demand for the H800 is such that NVIDIA is focusing on it even at the expense of the A800.

This rumor is related to the one that NVIDIA is looking at TSMC to expand its advanced end-of-stage factories that are dedicated to the CoWoS packaging these GPUs use. The H800’s profit margins should be pretty hefty, probably more than the H100’s because the Chinese don’t have access to alternatives that beat NVIDIA’s accelerator.

Rumors also say that before a possible ban on sales of the A800 and H800 by the US, its price shot up to about $15,000, to now be more stabilized. NVIDIA is trying to get on this injection of extra income as soon as possible, encouraging TSMC to expand its production as soon as possible to get its share. Rumors are rumours, but this one seems quite feasible because, as I say, the H800, even as a heavily trimmed version of the H100, has no competitor in the Chinese market.
