Too much of a good thing: Music legend Eric Clapton sends anti-vaccine Robert F. Kennedy Jr. $5,000 for his US election campaign. But the donation came back promptly.

Washington – Support rejected: Guitarist Eric Clapton is not allowed to fuel the election campaign of US presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy with money. After the musician had transferred $5,000 to the declared corona denier and opponent of vaccination for his campaign, the money was returned immediately. That’s what he reported Business Insider citing documents from the electoral commission. But why does the politician want nothing to do with the famous rock star?

US elections 2024: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. rejects donation from Eric Clapton

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is the nephew of the assassinated US President John F. Kennedy, and submitted his application for the presidential candidacy in the USA in April. Like his uncle, he wants to represent the Democrats in the fight for the White House. According to the media report, his campaign team received the donation of $5,000 on July 13, but it was promptly refunded.

USA: Presidential candidates are not allowed to accept donations from abroad

The reason: The legal regulations in the USA do not allow campaign donations from people from other countries. Both donation and acceptance are prohibited by law. However, Clapton is a British citizen and resides in England. That’s why the money was not accepted – even if the donation was very much appreciated, said a spokesman for Kennedy Spiegel on request.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is a corona vaccination opponent – like Clapton

The question remains why Clapton actually wanted to support the controversial politician? In the past, Kennedy Jr. had repeatedly attracted attention as an opponent of vaccination and a corona denier who did not shy away from spreading crude conspiracy theories. To what extent Clapton shares the theories is unclear. But during the pandemic, the musician was also noticed by clear criticism of the vaccination campaign. He repeatedly railed against the ban on performances and events and ultimately refused to give concerts that should only be accessible to vaccinated people.

In Kennedy Jr., the musician seems to have found a brother in spirit. But now the politician has to do without the donation during the election campaign. But he’ll get over it. So far, the Democrat’s campaign as an opponent of US President Joe Biden in the US elections has been considered hopeless – Clapton’s $5,000 probably wouldn’t have changed that. (jkf)
