New Delhi: Raipur police have arrested Kalicharan, a monk who insulted Mahatma Gandhi at a religious gathering in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, from Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh. He was arrested on treason charges. The Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh governments have been at loggerheads over the arrest.

At a function in Raipur, Kalicharan spoke in praise of Gandhi assassin Nathuram Godsa and insulted Gandhiji. The police registered a case on the same day. Kalicharan was apprehended from Bageshwar Dham near Khajuraho yesterday morning.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh BJP leader and state home minister Narottam Mishra has accused the Chhattisgarh police of violating the rules. However, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister and Congress leader Bhupesh Bagal said the arrest was in compliance with the law and that the Madhya Pradesh minister should know whether he was happy or sad that the traitor had been caught.

Hate speech: Notice to appear

Haridwar police have issued notices to Jitendra Narayan Tyagi and Sadhvi Annapurna for making hate speech in Haridwar. They had come to the same police station the previous day to file a counter case. The police said that no case could be registered against the accused and action would be taken only after a detailed investigation. Congress leaders and actor Naseeruddin Shah, including Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gellot, have condemned the police inaction.
