Mexican Journalist Nelson Matus Shot Dead in Acapulco

MEXICO CITY, July 15 – Nelson Matus, a prominent Mexican journalist, was killed on Saturday in Acapulco, a coastal resort city located in the southwestern state of Guerrero, according to local media reports.

Matus, who served as the director of local news site Lo Real de Guerrero, was shot in his car in the parking lot of a store, as reported by Mexican newspaper El Universal.

The attack took place after 3:00 pm in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood in the northern part of Acapulco, Reforma, another Mexican newspaper, reported.

Reforma also noted that Matus had survived two assassination attempts in 2017 and 2019, as reported by local media.

This tragic incident comes just one week after the body of Luis Martin Sanchez, a journalist working for Mexican newspaper La Jornada, was found after being reported missing in the state of Nayarit.

The Guerrero state attorney general’s office has yet to release a statement regarding Matus’ death.

Investigating corruption, crime, and drug cartels in Mexico often comes at a high risk, as the country was deemed the deadliest in the world for journalists by media watchdog Reporters Without Borders last year.

Mexican authorities face mounting pressure to prioritize the safety of journalists and address the rampant violence often associated with reporting on sensitive topics.
